First Date Tips

Location

Location For the first date, low-key plans are better. A laid back, fun date will allow both parties to relax. If the date goes well, you'll have plenty of time later to impress your date with elaborate plans.

When thinking about the perfect location for your first date, consider the following first date tips: Pick a nice, simple restaurant. No one wants to be worried about the proper fork to use or how to pronounce restaurant items. Bowling, miniature golf and go-carts can all be fun. Try not to watch a 3 hour movie together on the first date unless both of you are planning to go to somewhere else for a chat afterwards. Otherwise you will spend most of your first date sitting in a cinema watching movie without much chance of having a decent conversation.

How To Keep The Conversation Flow

On a first date, the conversation is an important part. Through talking to your date, you'll show that you are interested in getting to know him/her. You'll also quickly find out if you have anything in common and if you are compatible.

Make a list of conversation starters before you go on a first date can be a good idea. If the conversation is flowing, you will probably do not need such a list. If, however, there is an awkward lull, turn to your list, but make it as natural as possible. An open-ended question gives you ammunition for additional conversation starters. If you keep notes, you may learn something you can use for future dates.

Try questions such as:

  • How do you like your job?
  • Where did you grow up?
  • If you could live anywhere, where would it be? Etc.

keep first dates light and breezy, to stay away from controversial topics such as death penalty, abortion, same-sex marriage etc. Try to find something pleasant to discuss and to avoid discussing former relationships at all costs.

Be Yourself

Is OK to let your date know you are nervous. Chances are your date feels the same way, and you both can let your guard down. You don't have to be perfect on the first date. It is about going out together, have some fun and getting to know each other better.

After The Date

As the night draws to a close, you will have probably made up your mind about the compatibility. While honesty can be awkward at times, it is always better to be upfront about your feelings. Don't say you'll call if you never intend to. Avoid saying "Let's do it again." if you know there will be no second date. If you did have a great time, say so. If you like someone you need to let them know and everyone enjoys knowing where they stand.
